Los Banos High School’s soccer teams faced Atwater High School in an intense matchup on Jan. 10. The girls soccer team battled valiantly but fell short, losing 1-0 to their opponents. Meanwhile, the boys soccer team performed well, tying 2-2 with Atwater.
The girls’ game was a contested match, with both teams creating scoring opportunities throughout. However, Atwater’s defense held fast, scoring the game’s only goal.
Despite the loss, the LBHS girls soccer team demonstrated teamwork and determination, showcasing its skills and strategic play.
“It was a great game, but we conceded a goal. We could’ve communicated better and taken more shot attempts during the match. I believe we will come back and win our next match,” said team captain Camila Rubio.
In contrast, the boys’ game was higher-scoring and action-packed. Los Banos took an early lead, with Dayron Alatriste scoring a penalty kick. However, Atwater refused to give up: it fought to score two goals to take the lead.
In the last few minutes of the match, Emanuel Hurley leveled the score with a goal. The match ended in a tie.
Los Banos demonstrated skill and strategy together to create scoring opportunities. Despite its inability to secure a win, the team’s performance indicated its potential for success in future matches.
“We started a lot stronger this game, with the early penalty kick to go up 1-0. We were playing pretty well until we made some costly mistakes, which ended up turning into a 2-1 lead against us,” said Hurley, the team captain.
“We all continued to play pretty well and ended the game 2-2. Overall, we just need to clean up some mistakes, and we should have a good season,” Hurley said.
The matches against Atwater marked the teams second games in the new league. Their
next match will occur on Jan. 15 at Buhach Colony High School.
