As is well known, October is the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. National organizations bid for our support and impact us locally.
Certainly, progress made through cancer research has had a profound effect on local families. We may know someone who struggles with this disease or has lost a loved one to it, and we can do something to help on the national and local levels.
If you know a person or family dealing with any type of cancer, lend support. A delivered homemade dinner is a welcome treat. Help with driving, travel expenses or do something with the family’s children. You will never regret doing a little something for someone suffering.
If you want to contribute to cancer research, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) receives the highest ratings from watchdog groups. According to various internet sites, BCRF is one of the most highly efficient nonprofit companies. It has a strong rating for accountability, with a significant amount of its income going towards research and support programs.
Do not be confused by groups with similar names. Some end in “Center” or “Fund,” while others include words like “American” or “National.” There are many groups trying to take advantage of your generosity. Resist the temptation to donate to unsolicited phone callers. There is no sure way to verify if they are scammers.
The Susan G. Komen Organization first started the Pink Ribbon Campaign in 1990. Now, wearing pink for October is universal. Check ratings on the internet to determine the best cause for your donations.
The American Liver Foundation promotes October as National Liver Awareness and Liver Cancer Awareness Month. Generally, the liver repairs itself, but numerous diseases hinder the rebuilding process. With the aging of America, liver disease is increasing.
Four major concerns are linked to liver cancer. Firstly, it is impossible to detect until the final stages because the cancer grows without causing pain or showing symptoms. Secondly, it is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Thirdly, the liver is vital for supporting many bodily functions. Lastly, it is one of the few types of cancer that is on the rise.
The liver’s large size and up-front location make it vulnerable to diseases, and many of those ailments lead to cancer or liver failure when left untreated.
There is much we can do to support our liver health, such as maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine. Carbs and white flour contribute to a fatty liver, so removing them from your diet can be a helpful way to maintain a healthy liver.
Be particularly cautious about using over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements and alcohol. Check with your doctor about the use of all medications and supplements.
So-called health products, particularly when combined, can have serious side effects. Imagine that childhood experiment of putting baking soda into vinegar; two substances that appear calm and stable on the surface explode when united. Imagine what can happen when various substances combine inside our bodies.
This month, develop habits that are safe and loving to your liver, and see a local health professional for cancer and health screenings.
October is also known as Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Our local home for adults with special needs is Stephanie’s House (formerly known as the Agnes Whitson Home), 42825 Valeria Ave.
Various medical causes solicit support during October. Researchers for Lupus, Spina Bifida, Psoriasis and Hepatitis all seek funds. Always check a site such as Charity Navigator for a group’s worthiness. Administration and fundraising should be less than 10 percent of the budget. Choose organizations you think will do the most good and contact them directly. Make sure to verify their credibility before giving personal information to solicitors. Most importantly, contribute locally to help those closest in need.
