Local car enthusiasts have two opportunities during the upcoming weeks to enjoy vintage autos. See the Eagle Field Runways Drags Reunion in Mendota and the Hot Summer Nights Car Show in Dos Palos.

Remember that the Eagle Field Runway Drags presents its annual reunion on May 17 and 18 at Mendota Raceway Park, 359 Airport Boulevard. Racing begins at 10:00 a.m. each day.

Organizer, Rocky Philips, emphasizes, “It’s the same race, different place! See all your favorite cars.” He bids, “Reunite with your family and friends. This reunion pulls to our area runway drag race lovers from all over the West.”

According to Phillips, over the years, much has changed, but the basics are the same. Considering what has not changed, he explains, “…the amount of effort put into presenting a no-hassle event with a family atmosphere. The Eagle Field Family does an awesome job and works tirelessly to make our event as enjoyable as ever.”

Rocky tells some of the development over the years, “The event has progressed from a one-day drag race to a full weekend of activities, including awesome exhibition cars.” He points out wheelstanders as the “Best show on 2 wheels.”

This year again features Jeff Atamian’s “BEAST” jet dragster. Atamian, based in Mendota, has been racing since 1975 with a 100 percent safety record. He demonstrates The Beast at drag races, air shows, car burns and auto shows.

Their website claims, “The Beast Jet Dragster pushes the edge with crowd-pleasing performance.” It has been featured on MythBusters. Dos Palos local, Franklin Azevedo, is another star in the “hella quick” black Camaro, a Multi-Time Doorslammer Champion.

Lots of free extras come with general admission. There are free swap meet spaces with paid admission. Rocky adds that the auto swap meet has been a developing event, “offering some great deals and interesting finds.”

Those who buy a two-day pass can camp for no charge beginning on Friday. Saturday night features a “pit party.” Runway Drags is a great event for “family, friends and fans!” Children 13 and under are welcome with free admission. No alcohol or glass, please.

Junior drivers compete with a discounted entry fee. Mini Bikes are welcome at the Runway Drags Reunion in Mendota. The mini bike entry fee is $50 per day. For Eagle Field Runway Drags, contact Rocky Phillips at 559-351-3537. Find forms online at eaglefielddrags.com.

Whether or not you get a chance to whet your nostalgia appetite at the races, see an amazing array of classic cars on June 7, in Dos Palos. The Dos Palos Lions Club presents its 33rd Annual Hot Summer Nights Car Show.

There is no admission charge for the public to enjoy music while viewing the cars and vendors. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Children will enjoy the Kids Zone. Those exhibiting vehicles get a free t-shirt with pre-registration. Dust off that old auto and have a chance to win a trophy.

On June 7, registration is at 10:00 a.m. Judging is from noon until 4 p.m. Trophies are awarded at 5 p.m.

The Biggest Car Club represented receives a trophy. There are Best of Show and People’s Choice trophies.
