A Merced driver suspected of driving under the influence, rear-ended another vehicle on Highway 152 sending two children to the hospital.

According to a California Highway Patrol preliminary investigation report, at approximately 8:32 p.m. July 8, Sonia Guerrero, age 31 of Los Banos was driving a 2013 Nissan Frontier westbound on Hwy. 152 just west of Delta Road at 50 miles per hour.

Elizabeth Garibay, age 25 of Merced was also westbound on Highway. 152, traveling an unknown rate of speed and allowed the front of her 2007 Toyota Camry to impact the rear of the Nissan causing it to lose control and rollover onto its left side into an irrigation ditch.
Garibay lost control of her Toyota and crashed into a center median ditch. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and both suffered minor injuries.

There were two boys, ages four and eight in the Toyota who were not property retrained and suffered moderate to major injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera.

Garibay was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
