A man was stabbed in the face at a Los Banos homeless encampment on Friday, according to the Los Banos Police Department.
The encampment, located at the 1100 block of G Street, is next to the Los Banos Police Station.
Cmdr. Justin Melden said officers responded to the incident at approximately 6:30 p.m. after being made aware of the stabbing.
Melden said the adult male victim was transported to a medical facility where he was treated for his injuries.
Following an investigation, detectives quickly identified 28-year-old Leonard Candelaria as a suspect. Law enforcement established probable cause and arrested Candelaria on suspicion of attempted murder.
Candelaria was booked into the Merced County Main Jail. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.
Melden said he is unsure what led to the stabbing or whether there was an argument preceding it. The investigation remains open.
