Los Banos High School golfer Gannon Lemos had an impressive journey this season, making it all the way to the Masters golf tournament held on May 12. Although he didn’t perform as well as he hoped, shooting a score of 89 and placing 70th out of 116 competitors, Lemos says the season was a major success.
He looked back on his season by saying, “The golf season overall was fun. Our team got 4th in league, so they didn’t get to come to sections with me, but I still got it done for the team.”
Lemos’s journey in golf started unexpectedly during his freshman year. After suffering an injury in basketball, he was unable to play baseball, which led him to try out golf.
What started as a replacement sport eventually turned into his favorite sport. “I just fell in love with the game,” he said.
This year, Lemos had a great performance in high school golf, with a scoring average of 37.2 strokes per 9 holes and a current handicap of +0.4. His career low round is an impressive 65, shot at Tracy Country Club. During the Section Championships, Lemos shot a 75 and tied for 1st place out of 106 golfers, a moment he will surely not forget.
Looking forward, Lemos has big plans for his future in golf. He will be continuing his golf career for the next two years at Fresno City College, where he seeks to improve his skills further. His dream is to eventually turn pro, but he knows the next step in his journey will be playing Division 1 golf after his time at Junior College.
When talking about high school golf, Lemos shared his appreciation for the memories he made. “There will never be anything like high school golf and the memories that you make,” he said. Behind all the success Lemos has achieved, he credits the support of his mother, who has always encouraged him to keep pushing and never settle for less.
Though his Masters’ performance wasn’t what he hoped for, Lemos’s journey is just beginning. With his talent, dedication, and support from his family, the future looks bright for him.
