The kickoff for Measure P, the bond extension that would enable the Los Banos Campus of Merced College to expand its facilities, including a new Career Tech Training Center, took place Oct. 1 in Los Banos’ Henry Miller Plaza and drew several dozen people who learned more about the measure, many of whom then volunteered to help with the bond campaign.

The event, sponsored by the Friends of the Merced College Los Banos Campus for Measure P, preceded an Oct. 5 canvassing of Los Banos, during which about 30 volunteers walked through different neighborhoods, knocking on doors, talking with voters and passing out information about the measure.

Measure P, which volunteers reminded voters is the last item on the Nov. 5 ballot, would, if passed, not be any increase in tax rates but an extension of the bond Westside that voters passed in 2002 and paid off before the new bond would go into effect.

Volunteers who participated in the Oct. 5 canvassing said they were pleased with how welcomed they were when people came to the door and with how many people agreed to have yard signs saying “Yes on Measure P” on their front lawn.

“So many people I talked with expressed their appreciation for the Los Banos Campus,” said Antonia Martin, a volunteer who walked with another volunteer in one of the community neighborhoods. “They also appreciated that there would not be an increase of tax rates, just an extension of the current bond.”

Friends of Merced College Los Banos Campus for Measure P also plan to canvas neighborhoods in Dos Palos, knocking on doors and talking about the measure. The Los Banos Campus has long had a strong relationship with the Dos Palos community and with Dos Palos High School.
