Merced College’s Los Banos Campus is alive with activity this summer.

From June 2 to July 24, students are enrolled in a variety of classes, including general education (GE), English as a second language (ESL), general educational development (GED), and hands-on programs like certified nursing assistant (CNA) training.

According to Dean Jessica Moran, summer is a time when students can “catch up or get ahead.”

“The beautiful thing about our community college is that it’s truly open to the whole community,” Moran said. “Whether you’re a recent high school graduate, returning adult or someone just looking to learn English, we accept everyone.”

While most summer classes are online, core subjects like math and English are still offered in person. Enrollment this year has increased compared to past summers.

One addition this summer is the new plant science program led by Professor Elias Armenta. With fresh squash, fruit and even a food forest, the class gives students hands-on experience and access to free produce.

New instructors are also bringing fresh energy to the campus this summer, including Kayla Jimenez (medical assistant), Dr. Madeline Brown (geography), and Deborah Mason (criminology).

Students often say summer classes feel different in a good way. Courses are shorter, usually lasting just four to six weeks, and the campus atmosphere is calmer.

“With smaller class sizes and fewer distractions,” Moran explained, “students often form stronger connections with instructors and peers.”

While it’s too late to enroll for summer, fall classes begin on Aug. 25, and registration is still open. A registration event will be held on Aug. 16.

During this one-day event, future students can complete all five enrollment steps in one visit: applying to Merced College, completing the placement questionnaire, attending orientation, meeting with a counselor and registering for classes.

All steps are also available online at www.mccd.edu/enroll. Moran encourages anyone in the community to visit the welcome center (open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) for help with the process.

“We’re truly thankful for the continued support from our community,” Moran said. “If you’re even thinking about taking a class, stop by the welcome center. You’re always welcome here.”
