Since the age of 12, senior Jimena Valdez has dedicated herself to soccer, overcoming challenges and embracing every opportunity to grow, both on and off the field.
Her journey began at a young age, influenced by the biggest supporter in her soccer career: her father, who introduced her to the game she now loves. As a key player for Los Banos High School’s soccer team, Valdez plays in the midfielder position, contributing to the team in multiple ways. “My favorite part about playing midfield is getting a lot of assists,” she shared.
While the thrill of competition keeps her motivated, some of Valdez’s fondest memories come from the moments off the field. Among them, she cherishes the fun and laughter shared with teammates on bus rides to and from games.
However, balancing school and soccer hasn’t always been easy. “It was hard, but I had to stay consistent and focused,” she admitted. The discipline and time management skills she has developed have made her stronger, preparing her for the next steps in both her athletic and academic journey.
Like many athletes, Valdez has faced setbacks, most notably injuries that sidelined her for extended periods. The recovery process tested her patience, but she never let those challenges break her spirit. “It would make me impatient, but once I was able to play again, I gave it my all,” she said.
Through these experiences, she has learned one of the most valuable lessons soccer offers. “Soccer has taught me resilience, the art of bouncing back. The game has a beautiful yet brutal way of teaching me how to handle adversity. Every missed goal, every lost game and every injury serve as reminders of the hurdles we face in life.”
Looking ahead, Valdez hopes to continue her soccer career in college and beyond. “If I could play for any team, it would be San Diego Wave FC because they are a really good team, and they’re located in a beautiful place,” she said.
With her passion, resilience, and determination, Valdez is ready to take the next step in her soccer journey, wherever the game may lead her.
