The Los Banos Rotary Club held its annual speech contest at the Merced College Los Banos Campus on Jan. 29.

The event, which aims to improve public speaking skills and confidence among local students, was made possible with the assistance of speech professor Dr. Griffin Cheek.

This year’s contest featured three students from Los Banos High School and five students Pacheco High School competing for four places. Both schools delivered impressive speeches from their students on the topic, “How the Magic of Rotary Changes the World”. After consideration, the judges announced the winners.

“When I first heard my name called, my expression was difficult to hide as I had a large smile. I felt a sense of accomplishment and happiness. To prepare for the contest I wanted to be educated. I reached out to Los Banos Rotary Club President Tanya Price on more information about the Rotary,” said Canchola. “She was more than happy to help. She explained to me their mission, their morals, and some of their history.

“Advancing to the Rotary Area Speech Contest in Madera makes me proud, because I am able to not only represent my school but my community in front of dozens of people. I can’t wait to get up there and do it again, and honestly just have fun and be thankful for this opportunity,” he said.

The Los Banos Rotary Club congratulates all participants on their achievements and thanks Dr. Griffin Cheek for his support. The club looks forward to seeing Ruben Canchola represent Los Banos at the upcoming Rotary Area Speech Contest.
