It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert C. “Corky” Sherwood on February 12, 2025, at the age of 78. He passed away peacefully, just two years after the loss of his beloved wife, Jan.
Born in 1946, Corky spent most of his life in and around Dos Palos and Los Banos, where he built a legacy of integrity, hard work, and dedication to his family, business, and community. After serving in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War, he and Jan married and raised their two sons, Jonathan (Dallas, TX) and Stephen (Los Banos). In 1977, Corky founded R.C. Sherwood Grain Co., carrying forward the family tradition of grain trading. His deep knowledge and passion for the industry helped shape the region, and today, his sons continue his legacy.
Beyond his work, Corky had a lifelong love for aviation, earning his pilot’s license and flying his Cessna 182 over the San Joaquin Valley. He and Jan also cherished travel, visiting over 35 countries, with a special appreciation for European history. Their mountain retreat in Mi Wuk Village was a favorite getaway, where they hosted family and friends.
Corky’s sharp mind, strong convictions, and unwavering integrity earned him the respect of many. He was an engaged member of his community, supporting local organizations such as Future Farmers of America, Ducks Unlimited, and the Los Banos VFW Flag Service Program.
He is survived by his sons, Jonathan and Stephen; daughter-in-law, Sonia; grandchildren, Stephen II and Justin; his sister, Diane; his brothers, Joseph (Jack) and Charles. He is reunited with his parents, Sylvian and Dionne, and his beloved wife, Jan. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and his four cherished Great Pyrenees dogs.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Mission De Oro in Santa Nella. His ashes will be interred with military honors at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in a private ceremony. Cards and condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 929, Los Banos, CA 93635.
Corky’s legacy of honor, kindness, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
