As summer gives way to fall, the changing seasons bring a breath of fresh air from the scorching summer heat. This change is a welcomed reprieve from the oppressive heat of the past few weeks. But not all change is welcomed because people see change in different ways. Some welcome change and see it as a new beginning. Most resist change and desire to keep the status quo. Change often breeds uncertainty, and uncertainty causes confusion and fear. In a season of so many changes, from the weather to politics to the housing market to the rising prices of everything, I encourage everyone to stay focused on the One true constant in our world. Hebrews 12:2 points us in the right direction during times of uncertainty. “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” NIV
The writer of Hebrews tells us to stay focused in the midst of an ever-changing world. Politicians come and go. Laws change day by day. Morals seem to degrade with each generation. What used to be good is now called evil and what used to be evil is now called good. How can we make sense of all the changes in the world? The answer is to focus on the One who is the same yesterday, today and forever. His name is Jesus. He is still relevant today for every answer to our many questions, for direction and guidance to life’s many curves, for salvation even in a world that is growing darker with sin by the moment. He is our very present help in our time of need. He is our provider when our resources run thin. He is our strength when we are weak. He is our wisdom in everyday decisions from large purchases to the ballot box to parenting our children and so much more.
God the Father created the heavens and the earth in the beginning. Jesus came to restore mankind to God because of our great sin. Holy Spirit draws us nearer to God if we will but listen and allow Him to open our eyes to see His work in us. He gave us His Word to lead and guide us through this life. Therein lie the answers to all our questions amid the constant changes of this world. Stay focused on Him. Stay focused on His Word. Stay focused on Him in prayer. Ask of Him and He will answer us. He will answer because He loves us and desires to guide us through this world so that we can spend eternity with Him in heaven.
