For its next police chief, the city of Dos Palos has called upon a Merced native and veteran law enforcement officer.

Dayton Snyder was recently sworn in as the city’s new “top cop” in a ceremony attended by the city council, members of the DPPD, fellow law enforcement officers, his family, and members of the Dos Palos community.

Dos Palos’ new police chief, Dayton Snyder.

“Chief Snyder is a fantastic addition to the Dos Palos Police Department,” said Mayor Katy Reed. “I have confidence that he will lead by example and carry on the positivity the department has embraced.”

Snyder was born and raised in Merced, attended Merced High School, and graduated in 1993. He was a running back and defensive back for the Bears and also played catcher, shortstop, and second base on the Bear baseball squad.

He moved on to both Merced College and Fresno City College, the Union Institute and University, as well as Arizona State. He holds an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s degree in Public Safety Leadership.

He has 23 years in law enforcement with both Merced and Atwater, and most recently was a sergeant with the Atwater PD. He has also had the opportunity to work on many different assignments including the Multi-Agency Task Force.

“When I found out Dos Palos was looking for a permanent Chief of Police, I immediately put my name in for the position, as Dos Palos has an amazing reputation for community support for its first responders and its reputation does not disappoint,” the new chef said.

He said his short-term goals are to meet with the community, and he already has hosted an informal “Meet & Greet” with local citizens at the local Coffee Saloon.

“I want to find out where the police department can better assist with their needs so they can feel safe in their community,” he explained. “I want to build internal and external trust and establish open lines of communication and assess the current state of the department.”

With city officials ‘crossing their fingers’ that Dos Palos is poised to grow, Snyder wants to be ready by building out the department, bring in new technology to create efficiencies, establish consistent and transparent communication “and maximize each officer’s talents so they can continue providing professional services to the community they serve.”

The DPPD currently has 10 sworn officers, three reserve officers, and six non-sworn officers.

Dos Palos City Manager Dewayne Jones said that out of the five candidates vying for the position, Snyder stood out in his eyes.

“His training, education, and experience along with his many special assignments he has held make him an excellent fit for the Dos Palos Police Department,” Jones explained.

“Chief Snyder’s vision and commitment to excellence includes a community-oriented approach, dedication to transparency, and an emphasis on building trust within our city,” Mayor Reed added. “Through visibility and accessibility, Chief Snyder will be able to effectively address issues, implement solutions, and continue to build trust.”

When not working, Snyder spends his free time with his wife and grandchildren, coaching, and playing golf.
