The Missoula Children’s Theatre is returning to Los Banos this summer with another week-long theatre experience for local youth, and this year’s production is “Red Riding Hood.” According to Steven Soares of the Los Banos Arts Council, the program is not only fun and engaging but free for all participants.

On Monday, June 23, Missoula’s directors will hold open auditions at the Ted Falasco Arts Center. Up to 60 children will be cast in “Red Riding Hood,” ranging in age and experience.

“They play theatre games with the kids to assess things like voice, stage presence, and expression,” Soares explained. “It’s really interactive and helps break the ice.”

While all are welcome to audition, older children often receive the main roles due to their ability to take on more lines and direction.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre, based in Missoula, Montana, is a well-known touring company that brings live theatre opportunities to children across the United States.

Its model sends directors out on the road, traveling city to city with sets, costumes and a script in tow. Once they arrive in a town, they cast a full production with local children and stage the show in just one week.

Rehearsals take place Monday through Thursday, with two full performances presented on Friday, June 27. The entire program, from audition to curtain call, is offered at no cost to families.

According to Soares, the kids typically have a blast when the theatre comes to town. He also mentions that it’s more fun than it is work, and even though they’re memorizing lines and learning choreography, they’re laughing and building friendships every day.

For many participants, this is their first time performing on stage. Soares says it is such a positive environment and that the children are proud of their work by the end of the week. The Los Banos Arts Council encourages all local families to consider this opportunity.
