By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. Hebrews 11:8-10 NIV
Life brings us many reasons to look forward. We look forward each week to the weekend. We look forward each summer to vacation. We look forward at the end of our career to retirement.
In these verses, we see Abraham go through his whole life wandering from his homeland because God told him to go west to a land that He would give to him and his descendants.
Abraham took God at His word and obeyed even though it didn’t make sense to do so. His faith looked forward to what God had promised him. Faith saw far beyond what his eyes could see.
Today, we have the opportunity to take the same step of faith that Abraham took. Jesus has promised us that He was going to prepare a place for us and that He would come back to get us so that we can be where he is.
We have something amazing to look forward to. Just like Abraham, we may feel like we are wandering around aimlessly with no clear direction for our lives. Adverse circumstances can cause our faith to be shaken and we lose sight of our inheritance.
Abraham persevered and kept his eyes on God and the promise that God made him. This is a great example for each of us to follow. Stay focused on God and His promise that He has made to us. We have something to look forward to in our future.
So, look up, for God has promised us abundant life on earth and eternal life in heaven. Jesus is coming soon to take us to that city whose architect and builder is God.
