A library is still important for success in college, which is why the Merced College Los Banos Campus library is available five days a week to college students.
The library, located in the A building on the campus at 22240 Highway 152, is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
During all library hours, students can get help from the librarian at the reference desk. They can also contact a librarian by phone (209.384.6434) or via email (refdesk@mccd.edu) or via a text (209. 666.3235).
Today’s Campus Scene will briefly introduce the library’s staff and highlight the library services available for all Merced College students this side of the San JoaquÃn River.
The Los Banos Campus classified staff in the library are Alejandro Arellano, Library and Media Technician, and Tiffiny Tevis, Library and Media Clerk. Both staff members originally were student workers for the library beginning in 2011 and 2014 respectively, until they graduated from Merced College.
When permanent employment opportunities for the campus library arose, they seized their opportunities, applied for the positions and were hired. Ever since, they have provided, and even expanded, library services to students in and around Los Banos and Dos Palos.
The Los Banos Campus library also has four faculty reference librarians ready to help develop and reinforce students’ research skills. Wayne Altenberg and Nancy Golz joined the library team in 2016 and 2017 respectively as full-time reference librarians. They are supported by part-time reference librarians Leigh-Ann Thornhill and John Bultena.
Whatever topic students are working with in their classes, these skilled and knowledgeable faculty reference librarians will happily assist them in navigating many valuable databases and locating reputable, scholarly sources.
The campus’s library staff understands that life sometimes gets a little chaotic. When an individual is pursuing a college education, life seems at times almost overwhelming.
All students, at some point in their college careers, the staff recognizes, may encounter challenges that could upend or delay their pathway to a degree or certificate. A lack of access to technology or required materials can create frustrating barriers to success. For the westside student community of Merced College, however, a lack of access to educational materials is not an issue at the Los Banos Campus library.
