After enjoying a bye week last week, the Los Banos Tigers JV football team (4–1–1) returned to the gridiron and completely dominated the El Capitan Gauchos by 30–0.
Coach Donald Toscano (yes, that Donald Toscano) told The Express after the game, “The guys really came together tonight, both on offense and defense. A complete victory all the way around.”
The Tigers offense used an excellent performance by quarterback Zaevin Cancino (4 of 7 passing, 83 yards, a touchdown, 11 carries, 85 yards, and two TDs).
They also used a combination of three running backs—Bradley Villagrana (four carries and 41 yards), Michael Coelho (six carries, 30 yards and TD) and Marcos Wheeler (two carries and 21 yards)—to rack up 285 yards of total offense.
The young Tigers scored on three of their five offensive possessions, beginning with a six-play, 45-yard drive that culminated with Cancino powering over the goal line from the 3-yard line. Cancino added the 2-point conversion for an 8–0 lead.
Xavier Arce scored a TD for the Tigers defense. When Zachery Yates forced a fumble, Arce scooped up the loose pigskin and rambled 33 yards into the end zone for the score.
Brodie Martinez powered over the goal line for the 2-point conversion, and the Tigers had a 16–0 advantage going into halftime.
The Tigers received the second-half kickoff and exhibited some razzle-dazzle with a reverse. Austin Ladd returned the kick to the Gauchos 33-yard line. The Tigers needed just six plays to cover the 33 yards for their third TD.
Cancino completed a pass to Jacob Mireles to account for 19 yards, and then Cancino followed blocks by Jesus Hernandez and Jason Bridgford into the end zone from 14 yards out and a 22–0 Tigers advantage.
Once again, the Tigers defense set up the offense when pressure from Luke Borelli (five tackles and a quarterback sack) forced an errant pass. Andrew Garcia intercepted the pass at the Gauchos 45-yard line.
Cancino found Maggio Carter (one catch and 10 yards) for a 10-yard completion to begin the drive. He and Coelho combined for 35 more yards on the ground, with Coelho scoring the TD from 10 yards out.
Martinez ran in the conversion for a 30–0 lead late in the fourth period. Finally, the Tigers defense shut out the Gauchos and limited them to just 89 yards of total offense.
Borelli (five tackles and a QB sack) led the Tigers defense, followed by Arce (four tackles and an interception), Yates (four tackles) and Mason Robinson (four tackles).
