At about 7:02 p.m. August 26 a single engine plane crashed into a field about 200 yards east of Interstate 5 outside of Los Banos near Pole Line Road and Canyon Road.
Merced County Sheriff and Coroner Vern Warnke said one occupant inside the plane was found deceased. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.
Warnke said the plane took off from a small airport near San Jose. Warnke said Merced County Deputies will be at the scene all night Tuesday night awaiting the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration who will arrive August 27.
