Seniors vs Staff Basketball Game
Friday evening the Pacheco High seniors took on a team of staff members in the second annual Seniors vs Staff basketball game. The game serves as a fundraiser for the senior class with ticket money and concessions helping the senior parents raise money for end of year activities.
Behind the hot hands of Niko Lomeli and Sasha Siemiller the seniors jumped out to a double-digit lead at the half.
The staff team started working on that lead behind the strong play of girls basketball head coach Trent Taylor and some timely shooting from Principal Becky Salinas. With the game getting heated down the stretch, the staff overcame the double-digit deficit to force the game’s first ever four-minute overtime at 43 to 43.
The momentum built by the Staff was too much to overcome and the seniors ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. The win was the second in a row for the staff in this young rivalry. Final score was 46-45.
Baseball
Pacheco’s game against Beyer last Tuesday fell victim to the rain, resulting in a doubleheader being played on Thursday at Beyer. Riding on high emotions from playing league leading Ceres tough the Panthers were seeking wins to stay in the playoff hunt.
In game one the Patriots came out hot jumping on the Panthers for seven runs in the first two innings. Pacheco, serving as the home team for game one, got back into the game thanks to a strong sixth inning. Freshman Sam Honesto drew a one out walk, followed by walks to junior Aidan Pikas and senior Zealand Hatcher to load the bases. Honesto and Pikas scored on back to back wild pitches before sophomore Tucker Kim drove in Hatcher. A tough double play ended the rally inning and that would be as close as the Panthers got at 7-5 before giving up 4 in the seventh and falling 11-6.
Game two saw the Panthers get down big early once again. Beyer scored 7 runs, 6 of which were unearned on their way to a 7-1 lead after 3 innings. Both teams would score 2 runs each in the 4th inning before Pacheco tried to make a comeback with a 4 run 6th inning. The rally would not be enough as the Panthers would fall 10-7 in game two. Freshman Danny Romero finished the day 2-3, Kim went 3-5 with 2 RBI and Aidan Pikas was 3-8 with a double, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Pacheco takes on Grace Davis this week.
Swim
Entering Friday’s meet with Beyer at Pacheco High both the Patriots and Panthers sat atop the boys and girls standings at 4-0. Missing a couple of swimmers on the girls side the Panthers put up a great effort before falling 100.5-68.5. Despite the loss, new Pacheco coach Adriana DeSantiago is looking forward to the league finals at Pacheco where the team will get a chance to face Beyer again. On the boys side the Panthers remained in first place with their 108-53 win setting up a key regular season matchup next week when the teams host Davis.
Boys Volleyball
Boys Volleyball hosted Beyer last Wednesday and then traveled to Grace Davis on Friday. Against the visiting Patriots the Pacheco JV team remained fixed in the upper half of the WAC standings earning a 2-0 sweep. The Beyer varsity team proved too much for the young Panther varsity team getting a 3-0 victory. On Friday the JV team stayed hot, finishing the week 2-0 after a 2-1 win over the host Spartans. The third set was a true back and forth affair with the Panthers coming out on top 16-14. In varsity action the Panthers took the match all the way to game 5 before falling to the Spartans 3-2.
