I graduated from Merced High School in June 2024 and decided I would attend Merced College to earn my associate’s degree. This semester, fall 2024, was my first year attending Merced College at the Los Banos Campus, and I would say that it has been very successful so far.

Finals were last week, and I am not the only one that means this when I say I was very nervous for the final exams. It was so important to start studying and getting as prepared as possible so that I would have a higher chance of passing.

I have done this by creating flashcards, reviewing my homework assignments, focusing primarily on the things that confuse me and rewatching the video lectures. Good luck to all of those attending college and taking exams!

Starting off the semester, I was both nervous and excited. My major is in elementary education, and I plan on becoming an elementary school teacher. I enrolled in three classes: English 1A with the additional support class English 95S; Math 20A; and Music 10. I took the English class in person and the other two online.

I absolutely loved my English class! My English professor, John Long, taught it very well. We read many books that challenged our thought process, pondering the question of whether humans are mostly good or bad. This was a very interesting topic, and I came to the conclusion that humans are mostly bad. It was a very mind-opening experience that made me more aware of myself and the world around us.

For my math course, I was able to revisit all the math which elementary and middle school kids learn so I can be better equipped to teach this subject. I have never had the best experience with learning math growing up; this was good practice, nonetheless.

Finally, I chose to take a music fundamentals course as my elective because I am interested in music and want to learn to play instruments and read sheet music. I learned so much from this course!

In the future, I want to graduate from Merced College with an associate’s degree and then transfer to either Stanislaus, Fresno State, UC Merced or UCLA to attain my bachelor’s and then master’s degree in liberal arts.

The Los Banos Campus of Merced College is such a beautiful campus that offers so much to its students! There are many events that have been held such as the Heritage Food Day, when people of different cultures came to campus and offered some of their signature dishes to the students. There was also a Halloween costume contest and a trick or treating event held for the child development center, when children by the classrooms to get candy.

These were just some of the events I have experienced; there were so many and many more to come!
