The Dos Palos Director of Public Works has been selected to be the new interim city manager.
On March 17, the Dos Palos City Council voted unanimously to motion the current director of public works, Gordon Bonds, to take on a secondary role as the interim city manager. He takes on this role as the previous city manager, Dewyane Jones, retires from the position.
Bonds has been managing both roles as the director of public works and as the interim city manager for the past two weeks. He will be upholding both roles for about 30 days.
During the council meeting, council members did not disclose publicly the reasons why Bonds was appointed to be the new city manager.
According to the California Government Code 54957(b), which is part of the Brown Act, it explicitly allows local legislative bodies like the city council to hold closed sessions to discuss the appointment, employment, evaluation, discipline or dismissal of a public employee.
Bonds noted during his first city council meeting as interim city manager on April 14 that he has been having fun so far and is learning more about city hall within his new position.
“I never realized how busy city hall is, I am not gonna lie,” Bonds said. “I never realized how busy [city hall was] in the 24 years I have been here,” he mentioned.
Jones said his goodbyes and thanked his staff on March 17, as that was his last meeting as Dos Palos city manager.
“I’d like to thank my staff. I think the theme that we’ve created, you know, the last four years has been really crucial to our success,” Jones said. “Thanks to all of you for giving me a chance, and hopefully I didn’t disappoint too much,” he added.
Mayor Katy Reed mentioned her gratitude for Jones and the upcoming interim city manager.
“Thank you to Dwayne. He has made a huge impact on our city as his time was well spent here, and we’re all going to miss you and [Bonds] will have very big shoes to fill,” Reed stated. “So with that being said, welcome, Gordon,” she added.
