Trailing by a trio of touchdowns usually isn’t the recipe for success, especially after halftime, but the Firebaugh High football team persevered to win 35-28 at Caruthers.
“Down 28-7 in the third, found a way to come back and win,” Eagles coach Jorge Saldana said of Friday night’s thriller.
An offense that amassed a whopping 404 yards doesn’t hurt.
Junior running back Jayden Enriquez and senior quarterback Brayan Vilchis led the Firebaugh charge.
Enriquez did most of the legwork, literally, carrying 23 times for 185 yards with a touchdown.
Fellow junior Emiliano Bautista and senior Albert Osuna also found paydirt as part of the ground attack that racked up 285 yards on 41 carries.
In the air, Vilchis went 11-of-15 passing for 119 yards and 2 scores. Senior Dominic Barajas caught 4 of those passes for 58 yards with a TD, and Christian Argueta hauled in the other scoring strike for the Eagles.
On defense, senior defensive linemen Anthony Baeza and Enrique Nava each came up with fumble recoveries as Firebaugh improved to 2-1.
Up next for the Eagles is a road matchup Friday against the Fowler Redcats.
In JV action, Firebaugh cruised to a 33-8 victory.
