For many Los Banos residents, the canal trail is more than just a walking path. It is a place to exercise, enjoy fresh air, see nature and take a break from the busy routine of daily life. Recently, the Los Banos Public Works Streets Division began work on the Canal Trail improvement project, bringing attention to a well-used area that many community members value.

The City of Los Banos was awarded $100,000 through a grant from the San Joaquin River Water Authority Exchange Contractors to support improvements along the trail.

According to information shared by the Los Banos Parks and Recreation Department, the project includes installing solar lighting along the Canal Trail, which will be completed this summer to support evening use and create a safer walking environment.

Work has already started on parts of the trail, with paving underway. The improvements are expected to make the pathway smoother, safer and more comfortable for residents who use it for walking, jogging, running, or spending time outdoors.

The Canal Trail is a familiar outdoor space for many people in Los Banos. Located along the canal, the trail gives residents a place to enjoy the outdoors close to home. It is common to see people walking, exercising, and enjoying the natural scenery, including trees, water and wildlife along the pathway.

In addition to the lighting project, the city also announced an overlay of the H.G. Fawcett Canalside Trail. According to the city’s update, work is expected to begin in spring 2026 and will complete a smooth upgrade to the length of the trail.

These improvements show the importance of maintaining public spaces that support health, safety and community connection. Trails like the Canal Trail give residents a simple but meaningful way to stay active, spend time outside, and enjoy the beauty of their neighborhood.

As the project continues, residents can follow updates through the Los Banos Parks and Recreation Facebook page. Once completed, the Canal Trail improvements are expected to make one of the city’s popular outdoor areas safer, more accessible and more enjoyable for the community.
