After finishing with a perfect 4-0 West Sierra League dual record, the Firebaugh Eagle varsity wrestling team made it a clean sweep last Wednesday, winning the WSL team championship, which the school hosted.

Head Coach Bill Magnusson’s squad won the tournament with 196.5 points.  Dos Palos came in second with 157.5 points. Coalinga was third with 126.5 points, Mendota had 124.5 points, and Avenal was fifth with 20 points.

Firebaugh crowned six champions on the day, led by senior Isaac Ceja. Competing at 152 lbs., Ceja defeated Audilio Valencia of Mendota in the title match.

At 108 lbs., Eagle freshman Aiden Medina scored a second period pin over Landon Kiker of Coalinga to claim the title.

Medina’s teammate, Jordyn Fuentes, won the title at 134 lbs. with a pin of Carlos Martinez of Dos Palos. The 140 lb. title match saw freshman Jeremiah Rosa of Firebaugh defeat Jesus Tapia of Dos Palos by way of pin.

Senior Arren Alaniz of Firebaugh, one of the Eagle captains, pinned Damien Lopez of Dos Palos to win the title at 159 lbs. Firebaugh’s final title came at 167 lbs. where Mikie Perez defeated Nicholas Yamas with a technical fall.

Besides the six champions, Firebaugh also had four wrestlers coming in second place. Freshman Steve Garcia lost to Enrique Cortes of Mendota, 9-1, and teammate Juan Orellana was defeated by Christopher Polanco of Coalinga.  At 146 lbs., Coalinga’s Tyson Alvarado won over Omar Perez of Firebaugh, and senior Alex Rosa of Firebaugh placed second at 177 lbs.

Firebaugh senior Corbin Diedrich (192 lbs.) and Vicente Cardoza (287 lbs.) placed third, and teammate Anthony Baeza (217 lbs.) placed fourth.

Now the attention turns to the CIF Div. IV divisionals, which will be held at Templeton High this Friday and Saturday.

Coalinga dominated the varsity girls championships of the WSL with 173.5 points, to easily outdistance second place Avenal with 129 points.

The Horned Toads also won the junior varsity team title with 119 points. Firebaugh was second with 83 points and Dos Palos had 75 points.
