A driver was killed on Jan. 16 in a collision involving a BMW and a big rig on Interstate 5, just south of Taglio Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash occurred around 9:02 a.m. when a 2011 BMW, traveling in the fast lane of northbound I-5, failed to slow down and rear-ended a 2022 International tractor-trailer rig which had slowed down and stopped following the traffic ahead.

The impact from the collision caused the BMW to become lodged underneath the trailer, resulting in both stopped vehicles blocking the fast lane. Emergency responders pronounced the driver of the BMW dead at the scene.

The driver’s identity has not been released, pending notification from the coroner’s office.

No passengers were in either vehicle at the time of the crash.

CHP investigators reported that it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.
