As a native Californian, I must say that Dennis Wyatt’s richly researched articles on California duly edified me.
Those about the San Joaquin River and California highways extended my knowledge of both on top of what I already knew about them because of biking or driving on, along or over them.
Also, the superb pictures of the river or its headwaters and of lands where highways were proposed bring back fond memories of exploration—or such memories as I’d like to have!
Did Wyatt write the pay phone article? It feels like his style, but it has no byline. The article about the air pollution study was also important but alarming.
It addressed pollution’s sometimes hidden but outsized human and financial costs. Publishing such articles spurs research and political will to address these issues.
In just these ways, the Express provides a vital public service of responsible journalism—a necessity of democracy that leaves the dicey morass of “news” purveyed by social media’s algorithms in the shade!
Very truly yours, a grateful subscriber to a priceless bargain, Mark R. Brux
